Wykład:

Lecture
1. Introduction to the course. Scope and evaluation rules. Role of energy in the economic and social development, historical relation between GDP and energy consumption. Energy balance of the biosphere. Local and global impacts of energy production.
2. Global energy challenge: greenhouse effect (physics, consequences, facts and prognoses).
3. Sustainable Energy Development as a historical imperative. Definitions, historical background, Brundtland Report, Earth Summit in Rio, Kyoto protocol, Kaya Equation.
4. UN Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its activity over the years. Flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol.
5. Selected energy scenarios of IEA and EC (fuel mix, demand for primary and final energy, GHGs emissions, depletion of fossil fuel resources, the role of renewable and alternative energy sources, energy security, CO2 capture and storage). Kaya equation.
6. The Tragedy of the Commons. External effects (costs and benefits) of fuel – energy technologies, definition, methods of estimation (IPA, LCA), importance in decision-making.
7. Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development in social, economic and environmental areas.
8. The historical development and forecasts of energy intensity of industrial processes and energy services (lighting, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, appliances, transport).
9. The role of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in sustainable energy development. Learning curves and support mechanisms.
During lectures students will be involved in discussions, games and case studies related to the subject during which they will interact with each other and with the teacher to enhance their group working capabilities.

Ćwiczenia projektowe:

Project

The aim of the project is to assess whether development of selected countries is becoming more sustainable with the use of Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development. Relevant indicators will address economic, social, and environmental aspects of development. The necessary calculus will be done based on data, mainly of World Bank, British Petroleum, EUROSTAT. Students will analyse the results and explain the reasons for observed changes in the values of indicators. Based on the results obtained and their observation of real life they will propose innovative solutions for changing the energy system into more sustainable one. The teaching material will be available at the Subject website.
