Philosophy and New Media

The course offers a “visualised” approach to the basic issues of philosophy. The aim is to present abstract philosophical concepts in the vast context of the new media. Film and web illustrations are supposed to help analyse the great tradition of Western thought in new light, closer to the perception of contemporary students.Major philosophical trends and concepts are discussed, as well as their impact on contemporary Western culture.
The curriculum of the course contains the following issues: (1) Shaping of the Philosophic Mind (the Presocratics, Socrates), (2) Total Philosophical Perspective (Plato and Aristotle), (3) The Classic Concepts of Happiness and Good (Epicurus, the Stoics), (4) Medieval Theocentric Philosophy (St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas), (5) Modern Rationalism (Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz), (6) Modern Empiricism (Bacon, Locke, Berkeley, Hume), (7) Revolution and Synthesis of Modern Philosophy (Kant, Hegel), (8) Positivism and Pragmatism (Comte, Mill, the Vienna Cricle, James), (9) Anti-Positivist Reaction (Nietzsche, Bergson), (10) Phenomenology (Husserl, Ingarden), (11) Existentialism (Heidegger, Sartre, Jaspers), (12) Psychoanalysis (Freud, Jung),(13) Christian Personalism, (14) Hermeneutics,
and (15) Postmodernism.

Teaching methods and techniques:
  • Seminar classes: Na zajęciach seminaryjnych podstawą jest prezentacja multimedialna oraz ustna prowadzona przez studentów. Kolejnym ważnym elementem kształcenia są odpowiedzi na powstałe pytania, a także dyskusja studentów nad prezentowanymi treściami.
Warunki i sposób zaliczenia poszczególnych form zajęć, w tym zasady zaliczeń poprawkowych, a także warunki dopuszczenia do egzaminu:

Active presence at seminars is required (based on knowledge of recommended texts which are to be found on the Faculty website), a project presentation.
To be admitted to sit the exam, the students are required to participate actively in seminars (only one lecture can be missed), and develop a project.
The student can take two resits.

    – Participation rules in classes: Studenci prezentują na forum grupy temat wskazany przez prowadzącego oraz uczestniczą w dyskusji nad tym tematem. Ocenie podlega zarówno wartość merytoryczna prezentacji, jak i tzw. kompetencje miękkie.
Method of calculating the final grade:

Presence and participation in class discussions – 10%.
Presentation of a paper – 30%. The students develop presentations on subjects related to the topic of the course.
Exam – 60%. The students will write an essay based on the contents of lectures and recommended reading.

Sposób i tryb wyrównywania zaległości powstałych wskutek nieobecności studenta na zajęciach:

If a student misses more than one lecture (which must be confirmed by a medical certificate), they have to read the material foreseen for the missed class, and discuss it during the lecturer’s duty hours.
